We all love our pets. From fluffy cats to boisterous pups. But we also know that life with animals isn’t always as clean as it could be. Even if your dog isn’t constantly knocking over vases and cups, or having accidents on the kitchen floor, you’re still going to have to deal with the occasional pet hair pile-up. Call it part of the joys of pet parenthood.

A little bit of excess fur is a small price to pay for a lifetime of companionship and comfort. Fortunately, you’re not in this battle alone. A good cordless vacuum cleaner for pet hair can save you a lot of headaches when it comes to keeping your home neat and tidy.

We’ve put together this list of the ultimate cordless vacuums to help you get started.

Are Cordless Vacuums Worth It?

Before we get to our list, we’re going to cover some important insights, including the answer to: “How do I choose a cordless vacuum cleaner?”. First, you’ll need to know whether a cordless cleaner is really the right tool for your home.

Cordless vacuums have their pros and cons to consider. On the one hand, cordless vacuum cleaners are wonderfully versatile. You don’t have to worry about tripping over wires (as well as your wayward pets) when you’re cleaning up. On the other hand, many cordless vacuum cleaners can compromise on power. When you’re dealing with pet hair, you need something that delivers the best of both worlds.

Before you start shopping, here are some pros and cons of cordless vacuum cleaners to help you decide if you’re starting your search in the right place.

Pros:

  • Brilliant versatility: You can get into tight spots with ease, and even vacuum furniture, like sofas, curtains, and rugs. Some cordless vacuums will also clean your car.
  • Lightweight: Cordless models are often designed to be very easy to move around. This means less heavy machinery to carry around your home.
  • Diverse: Cordless vacuum cleaners, like corded vacuum cleaners, come in a range of shapes and sizes to suit hardwood floors, deep carpet cleaning and more.
  • Affordable: Many corded vacuum cleaners are surprisingly affordable – particularly if you opt for smaller handheld or stock models.
  • Reach: You can zip around your entire house with a cordless vacuum cleaner, and never have to move the plug from one outlet to another.

Cons:

  • Battery life isn’t always as reliable as you’d like
  • Some cordless vacuum cleaners swap versatility for suction power
  • Some limitations in storage containers: You may have to empty the vacuum regularly

Your cordless vacuum is basically like a dustpan and brush – it’s something you’ll use frequently, and for short bursts of time. So, how do you pick the right model?

How we tested our Cordless Models

To bring you our list of the best cordless vacuum models for cleaning up pet hair, we followed a very strict testing procedure. Here are some of the factors we looked at:

  • Type of vacuum: What kind of vacuum is it, and how does that affect performance (i.e., upright, stick, handheld, etc)
  • Hair collection:How does the vacuum collect dirt and hair, and how much can it collect without needing to be emptied?
  • Ease of use: How much does the vacuum weigh, how easily can we manoeuvre it throughout the house, and are there any features which make it more intuitive?
  • Power: How long can the vacuum run without needing to be plugged in and recharged, how long does it take to recharge, and what kind of suction power can it offer?
  • Value: How does the price of the vacuum compare to the value you get?

Let’s get started.

The X Best Cordless Vacuums for Pet Hair

1.      Dyson Absolute Plus V11 Cordless

The Dyson Absolute Plus is one of the leading stick vacuum cleaners on the market for pet owners. This lightweight stick vacuum promises just as much suction power as a corded model, with an adaptable cleaner head that works with a range of floor types.

Unlike your average cordless vacuum, the Dyson 11 is a dynamic tool which automatically optimises suction to suit your floor. There’s even an LCD screen where you can check how much power you have left and adjust power settings. On average, you can expect around 60 minutes of cleaning without having to stop and recharge. The large container for storing dust and pet hair should give you plenty of storage too.

Although the V11 has a fantastic boost mode for dealing with tougher pet hair and stuck-on fluff, it only works for about 12 minutes on this power level before it needs to be recharged. Additionally, while the bagless vacuums from Dyson are quite flexible, they can be heavier than the alternatives.

2.      Hoover 500 3-in1 Cordless vacuum

Available at a much lower price than some leading stick vacuums, the Hoover 500 is a surprisingly powerful device for such a low-price tag. This stick vacuum comes with consistent suction power for picking up larger debris, hair, and dust. You can also enjoy a quick-release brush on the hoover head. This means it’s easier to get rid of any pet hair that gets tangled.

Hoover’s cordless vacuum is wonderfully versatile, with a fold-down option so it’s easier to store when it’s not in use. You also get a handful of tools included with your purchase, like a 2-in-1 dusting and upholstery tool, and a crevice tool. You can even transform your vacuum into a hand-held tool mid-clean, to get extra pet hair off the sofa.

The Pets turbo brush – a motorized add-on, comes with rotating bristles included to lift embedded dog and cat hairs from carpets, cushions, and curtains. This machine is much more lightweight than many other pet vacuums, at only 2.2kg, but it only holds up to around 0.45 litres of dirt at a time, so expect to take a lot of trips to the trash can.

3.      Shark Cordless Upright Anti-Hair Wrap

Stick vacuums are excellent for storage and getting into tight spots, but they’re not always the most powerful pet vacuums. If you’re keen to go beyond the basics of a stick vacuum cleaner, you can upgrade your floor cleaning session with he Shark Cordless upright. Promising incredible suction for up to 50 minutes of runtime, the Shark cordless will pick up plenty of dust and fur.

This machine can easily transition from carpeted to hard floors, with no need for any changes, as the device adapts dynamically to your floor. The strong suction function also benefits from an anti-hair-wrap brush which helps to lift embedded hair from out of your carpets.

The removable battery on the Shark is ready to recharge whenever you like, and you can even transform this upright model into a handheld when you need to tackle furniture, curtains, cushions, and even a messy dog bed. Unfortunately, the capacity is still quite low, and you will need more space at home for storing this device.

5.      iRobot Roomba S9+

Tired of always cleaning up after your pet? Why not get a bot to help you out? The iRobot Roomba S9+ is the most powerful robot vacuum cleaner on the market right now, offering excellent suction performance, and a sensational cleaning experience. All you need to do is set the system up to recognise your floor layout, and it’ll be ready to go.

The iRobot charges itself up between cleans, so you don’t have to remember to keep it ready for action. The device also steers itself around your home, so you can sit back and relax with your pooch. Less time cleaning means more time playing fetch! With the iRobot, you can expect a generous battery, and a fantastic, motorized tool system for collecting all kinds of dander, crumbs, pet hair, and more. You can even use your Alexa speaker to control your vacuum.

If the idea of a robot that does all your vacuuming for you wasn’t exciting enough, how about one that also cleans up out of itself? The iRobot can empty any dirt and dust into an airlock and allergen locked bag, so you can ignore it almost completely. It won’t be able to tackle your whole home at once, by going up and downstairs, but it does make life a lot easier.

6.      Shark Ultracyclone Pet Pro

Sometimes, all you need is an extra accessory or tool to help you out with those big cleaning sessions every once in a while. If that’s the case for you, the Shark Ultracyclone Pet Pro is a great pick. This handheld vacuum cleaner is one of the best products we’ve tested- ideal for sprucing up your furniture and cleaning curtains before visitors arrive.

Lightweight and portable, this futuristic-looking vacuum cleaner is almost as powerful as the latest full-size models, with advanced design features to simplify your life. There’s a set of useful tools and brushes included with the product too, like a self-cleaning turbo brush designed to reduce the risk of your vacuum getting too tangled in hair. There’s also an excellent crevice tool for cleaning corners and a bristle brush for those ground-in stains.

The Ultracyclone feels like the perfect partner for keeping your home and furniture clean. You can even take the product outside and use it to clean up your car. The extra-large dust cup is fantastic for tackling bigger jobs, as you can hold up to 0.7 litres at once. There’s no HEPA filter for people worried about allergens, but that wasn’t the biggest issue for us. Rather, we were bothered by the fact that we could only get about 11 minutes of cleaning out of each charge.

7.      Dyson V8 Animal Handheld

If you like the idea of a powerful Dyson hoover, but the V11 is a little out of your price range, you can still get an excellent clean with the Dyson Animal V8. Specially designed for cleaning up after pets, the V8 comes with a direct drive cleaning head that drives bristles as deep into your carpet as possible to remove the largest amount of dander and dirt.

Unlike other market-leading vacuum cleaners, the Dyson V8 comes with an amazing lifetime filter designed to constantly keep your air and home as clean as possible. The whole machine captures allergens and expels cleaner air. Alongside the allergen filters, you also get better power life for larger homes. Up to 40 minutes of powerful suction means you can clean most of the home, or you can use the motorized floor tool for up to 25 minutes at a time.

One thing we loved about this Dyson pet vacuum cleaner is that it comes with an easy hygienic dirt ejector to get rid the dirt you’ve gathered from your furry friends. The device is also thin and lightweight enough for compact storage spaces too. For extra help keeping your home in perfect condition, the V8 animal also comes with a mini motorized cleaning tool, and a docking station for charging up between cleans.

The biggest issue we had with this particular vacuum cleaner was how small the dirt container was, and how quickly you run out of energy in max power mode (Within 7 minutes). It’s also worth noting that there’s only one brush head to choose from.

What to Look for in a Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

Choosing a good-quality cordless vacuum cleaner can be a complicated process, particularly when cleaning up after furry friends. Cat hair and dog hair can be tougher to clean than standard dust and dirt. In most cases, vacuum cleaners can struggle with dog hair and dander because it can so easily be ground into the fibres of a carpet or end up in difficult-to-reach places.

On top of that, when you’re dealing with a cordless vacuum, there’s always the risk that you might not have as much power as you’d get with a corded model, which would make it easier to get that ground-in dirt and fur. Fortunately, there are a handful of great cordless vacuums out there which could be perfect for your home.

Here are a few tips on what you can look for to make the right purchase.

  • Charging performance:A great cordless vacuum needs to come with an easy-to-use charging dock so you can keep it powered up. A digital display can be helpful for checking how much power you have left at any given time. Look for a device that gives you a decent amount of battery life (even in high-power mode) without taking forever to recharge every time you want to use it.
  • Versatility: A good cordless vacuum needs to work with a range of floor types, from hard floor to removing hair from carpets. The type of vacuum cleaner you get can make a huge difference to how versatile it is. For instance, if you want to remove hair from furniture as well as your floors it’s a good idea to get a convertible cleaner, or a handheld vacuum cleaner, rather than a stick or upright.
  • Suction power:As mentioned above, most vacuum cleaners will struggle with pet hair in normal situations. This is why pet-ready vacuum cleaners come with extra suction power and special bristled brush heads to help you with picking up dirt. If you have a household with pets, look for the right combination of suction and accessories.
  • Filtration: Poet dander is a common airborne allergy. If you’re looking for a new vacuum cleaner because you’re worried about allergens, then look into filtration. HEPA filtration is the industry standard, but anything that can help you to get rid of odours and various microscopic particles in the air will make a huge difference to your quality of life. Make sure you can change the filters easily, if necessary, too.
  • Movability:A good cordless vacuum cleaner should be easy enough to move around your home. Look for something that you can slide under low-lying furniture or use to get into difficult spaces around your home. The best product for getting rid of hair on carpets and floors will be lightweight, easy to use, and comfortable. You shouldn’t be exhausted by the time you finish cleaning.
  • Capacity:A great cordless vacuum cleaner will need collect plenty of dirt before you need to rush to the trash can to empty it out. The better the capacity, the less you’ll need to put your cleaning on hold to empty the canister. Look for a capacity that’s large enough to handle the kind of rooms you’re going to be cleaning.
  • Noteworthy features: What makes this vacuum extra special? Can it charge itself like the iRobot automatic cleaner, or does it have an eco mode to help you save on energy? What kind of bonus accessories do you get to help with your cleaning process? Maybe you can find a bagless dust system that’s perfect for getting rid of dust mites and allergens.

Choosing the Best Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

The right cordless vacuum cleaner for cleaning up after your pet is a must-have investment for any homeowner with furry friends to think about. The ideal product should provide you with fade-free suction for as long as possible, while getting as much dirt out of your carpets and floors as they can in one go. With the options above, you’re sure to find something that’s right for you.
